Can I install an LVT floor over tiles?

You might think during a renovation: I’ll just leave the old tiles in place, put a new LVT floor on top, and that’s it. Sounds easy, right? However, it works a little differently with LVT.

Preparation makes the difference

A well-installed floor starts with a solid foundation. By leveling the subfloor first, you prevent long-term issues. This way, your floor not only looks great at installation but also stays perfectly even for years to come. Preparation may not be the most exciting part of the process, but it is the most important step for a floor that remains beautiful for many years.

Why this does not work well with LVT

An LVT floor is thin and flexible. This makes the material ideal for underfloor heating and comfortable to use, but also sensitive to uneven surfaces. If you install LVT directly over an old tile floor, over time every grout line will show through the surface. This detracts from the sleek appearance and is a waste of your new floor. That is why it is important to make the subfloor completely flat before installing the new floor.

Leveling: the solution for a smooth floor

Fortunately, the old tile floor usually does not need to be removed. With leveling, we apply a special leveling compound: a liquid layer that fills in all joints and height differences. Once it hardens, it creates a smooth and stable surface for the LVT floor to adhere perfectly. Leveling can correct small height differences of up to three centimeters. It is important to note that leveling makes the floor flat, not perfectly level. This is exactly what is needed for a durable and even result.
