Charente in four laying patterns

Charente has been Hebeta's most popular flooring choice for years. Part of its appeal lies in the variety of options it offers: the same oak color is available in wide planks, herringbone in two sizes, and both chevron and Viennese point patterns.

The XL plank is available in ten colors, the XL herringbone in nine, and the chevron and Viennese point patterns in four. This means you can choose your preferred color first, then select the flooring pattern that best suits your space.

In this blog, we'll explore how each laying pattern changes the look of a room and how you can combine different patterns throughout your home.

One Charente collection, four different flooring patterns. Discover how plank, herringbone, XL herringbone, Hungarian point, and Viennese point flooring transform a space and how to combine them throughout your home.

XL planks create a calm, balanced look in large spaces

Charente XL planks measure 153 centimeters long and 25 centimeters wide. Their generous size means fewer seams per square meter, giving an open concept living room or kitchen and living area a continuous, seamless appearance. Large furniture pieces, such as a sectional sofa or a long dining table, benefit from this calm, understated foundation.

The XL plank is also the option you can extend onto your staircase. This allows the entryway, stairs, and upstairs landing to share the same flooring color, creating a consistent look between the lower and upper floors.

Herringbone XL adds pattern without feeling too busy

Charente XL herringbone planks are just over 61 centimeters long and 15 centimeters wide. Thanks to their larger size, the pattern remains clearly defined, even in an average sized living room, without making the floor look too busy.

The zigzag pattern draws the eye in one direction across the room, creating a stronger sense of flow in a long living room or hallway.

Small format herringbone for smaller spaces

Charente herringbone comes in a smaller size, measuring 59.5 by 11.9 centimeters. With more planks per square meter, it creates a finer pattern that feels proportional to smaller spaces such as entryways, bedrooms, and home offices.

In a narrow entryway or small bedroom, a larger herringbone format may only fit a few zigzag rows across the width of the room, causing the pattern to be cut off by the walls. With the smaller format, more rows fit across the space, allowing the herringbone design to remain fully recognizable even in a compact room.

The pieces cut to fit around doorways, cabinets, and the base of a staircase are also smaller, making the edges of the pattern less noticeable.

One color, multiple areas of your home

Seating area and dining area

Because the color stays the same, you can combine different flooring patterns without making your home feel disconnected.

One popular combination is XL plank flooring in the seating area and XL herringbone in the dining area. This gives the dining table its own defined space while keeping the entire living room feeling cohesive.

Entryway and staircase

Another popular combination is herringbone flooring in the entryway and XL planks on the staircase. This gives the entryway character while keeping the staircase looking clean and understated.

By using the same color on the stairs and the flooring, the entryway, staircase, and upstairs landing flow together seamlessly, without any changes in color.

The transition between two flooring patterns

The transition between two flooring patterns

Transitioning between two flooring patterns requires careful planning. Where exactly will one pattern end, and how will it connect to the next? These are details you can discuss with your flooring dealer when the space is measured.

A border made from XL planks can also help define the transition.

The Hungarian point pattern creates continuous lines

With Charente's Hungarian point pattern, the ends of the planks are cut at a 60 degree angle. The planks meet at a point, creating continuous V shaped lines.

This creates a cleaner, more formal look than the staggered pattern of herringbone flooring. The same planks can also be installed in a Viennese point pattern.

Click or dryback

The XL plank and XL herringbone are available in two installation options.

Dryback LVT is fully glued to a smooth, level subfloor, creating a secure, quiet finish. Click LVT is installed as a floating floor and features an integrated cork underlayment, which can be especially useful on an upstairs wood subfloor or in an apartment.

Charente's smaller herringbone format and the Hungarian and Viennese point patterns are only available in dryback LVT.

Why so many people choose Charente

Most people start choosing their flooring by picking a color. With Charente, that's the only decision you need to make upfront.

Plank or herringbone, large or small format, click or dryback LVT: you can decide on those details later for each room. If you decide to renovate your staircase in the future, you can use the XL plank in the same color.

This way, your flooring can adapt as you make changes to your home, without having to choose a new color. Every version comes with a 20 year warranty.

Compare two flooring patterns side by side

The best way to decide whether herringbone or plank flooring suits your space is to compare them in your own home. Order samples of two flooring patterns in the same color and place them where the floor will be installed. Compare how they look in natural daylight and again in the evening.
